It's almost non-existent. My title is an oxymoron, Asian men are not mainstream in America at all. Well, not portrayed as normal citizens to say the least. In movies especially, there are no lead Asian male roles unless he knows how to fight or is a ninja. We're here in America too and do normal everyday things all other American males do. It's like we're forever boxed into of this category of unwanteds. This definitely makes it harder in the dating scenes as well, since there is a lack of positive media for Asian males to make us as manly as all other men. Asian men can be just as manly as any other type of man....
I don't know if it's ever possible for a complete change, I do notice small advances, so I am hopeful.
I agree with you, regarding movies I noticed that it was always the same thing, the same stereotypes : whenever you see an Asian man, he is either a kung fu guy or a geek or an Asian man that does not speak well English and has some accent
ReplyDeleteAnd when it comes to love, it's also rare to see a movie where an Asian man is dating the hot white girl of the movie (the gorgeous blond chick)
There are some steroptypes for black people too in movies (the funny black guy or the bad gangster...) but it's true that we can see black actors in lead roles.
Veroniiku ;-)
